Who we are

This site’s address is https://optimizelyvisuals.dev. It’s a personal blog about Optimizely and Episerver DXP development, written by Eric Markson.

The site is a static website — there are no user accounts, no logins, and no on-site comment system. Because of that, most of the data-collection that a typical dynamic site does simply doesn’t happen here. The main way you can send us information is the contact form.

The short version

We don’t ask you to create an account and we don’t build a profile of you ourselves. If you use the contact form, we receive what you type so we can reply. Like most sites, we use a few Google services — advertising (AdSense), analytics (Google Analytics), and spam protection (reCAPTCHA) — and those services may set cookies and collect data under Google’s own policies. We don’t sell your data.

Information you send us (contact form)

When you submit the contact form, we collect the name, email address, subject, and message you provide. We use this only to read and respond to your message. The submission is protected by Google reCAPTCHA (see below) and delivered to our inbox through Resend, an email-sending service. We don’t add you to any mailing list, and we don’t use this information for advertising.

Cookies and local storage

The website itself stores a single theme preference (light or dark) in your browser’s local storage. This never leaves your device and is not sent to us or anyone else.

Separately, the third-party services below (advertising, analytics, and reCAPTCHA) may set their own cookies or use similar technologies in your browser.

Advertising — Google AdSense

We use Google AdSense to display ads. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies and device identifiers to show ads based on your visits to this and other sites. You can review and control personalized advertising in your Google Ads settings and at aboutads.info. See also How Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Analytics — Google Analytics 4

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate usage — for example which posts are read, general (approximate, IP-derived) location, and device or browser type. GA4 sets cookies and processes this data under Google’s Privacy Policy; it does not store full IP addresses. You can opt out across all sites with Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Spam protection — Google reCAPTCHA

The contact form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA v3, which helps tell humans from bots. To do this, reCAPTCHA collects hardware and software information and interaction data and sends it to Google for analysis. This use is subject to Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Hosting — Cloudflare

The site is hosted on Cloudflare. To deliver and secure the site, Cloudflare may process limited technical data such as IP addresses and request metadata, and may provide us with cookieless, aggregate traffic analytics. See Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy.

Accessibility widget — UserWay

We use UserWay to provide an on-page accessibility menu (such as text sizing, contrast, and spacing adjustments). The widget loads from UserWay’s servers and may process limited technical data to provide and remember these settings, under UserWay’s own privacy policy.

Embedded content from other sites

Posts may include embedded content — for example code snippets from GitHub Gist, images or GIFs from Giphy, and other external images. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited the other site directly, and those sites may collect data about you, set their own cookies, and track your interaction with that content.

Posts link out to other websites (such as GitHub, Optimizely, and documentation). We aren’t responsible for the privacy practices of those sites; review their policies when you visit them.

How long we keep data

We don’t maintain a database of visitors. Messages you send through the contact form live in our email inbox and are kept only as long as they’re useful for correspondence, then deleted. Data held by Google (ads, analytics) and Cloudflare is retained according to their respective policies.

Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live (for example the EEA, the UK, or California), you may have additional rights to access, correct, or delete personal data. Contact us and we’ll do our best to help.

Children’s privacy

This site is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 where that is the applicable age).

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time; the “last updated” date above reflects the current version.
